During the Second Boer War, staggering losses against Boer guerrillas prompted the British to adopt highly unorthodox tactics. Intending to “fight the Boer as he fought them,” a mounted counter-insurgency unit known as the Bushveldt Carbineers was formed.

However, the Carbineers would become most known for the trial and execution of two of their officers, Lieutenant Peter Handcock (pictured bottom left) and Lieutenant Harry “Breaker” Morant (pictured bottom right).

Morant and Handcock were convicted of murdering Boer prisoners-of-war in retaliation for the mutilation and killing of one of the Carbineer’s own, Captain Frederick Percy Hunt (pictured third photograph from top, third man from right). Hunt was a dear friend of both Handcock and Morant.

The executions, which took place less than three months before the war’s end, are regarded by some as the deliberate British scapegoating of two junior Australian officers despite unwritten standing orders for the Carbineers to take no prisoners and a wider British policy of “scorched earth” tactics and concentration camps.

The Battle of Majuba Hill was a humiliating defeat for the British during the First Boer War. Two companies of the 58th Regiment, two companies of Gordon Highlanders and a company-sized Naval contingent under the command of Sir George Pomeroy Colley had taken up a position on Majuba Hill, expecting the Boers at the Laing’s Nek pass to simply flee at the sight of British soldiers in an elevated position.

Colley’s overconfidence would prove fatal. The Boers, spurred on by the lack of British artillery support, advanced up the hill practicing modern fire-and-maneuver tactics. The British were subsequently pinned on the hilltop despite their apparently superior position, and silhouetted against the ridgeline without orders to dig in, became easy targets for Boer marksmen. Colley was killed while attempting to rally his panicking troops and the British line crumbled into a confused rout down the rear face of the hill, with Boer marksmen firing on the fleeing British from their former positions on the hilltop.

Though their forces were roughly matched in numbers at the outset, total British casualties were close to 300, while the Boers lost only one man killed.
